Obligatory first post!

My background:

I have a 2003 VW GTI, affectionately named Veronika, which I bought totaled as my first car three years ago. Ended up not having a vehicle for prom but I've done two rally schools and 5 RallyX's with it, so more than happy.

I have a 1982 VW Scirocco, which is being built to be my first stage rally car, and I have a 1986 Volvo 240 that I will be using to tow it. They both cost me $1k. Yes the Volvo can tow. Somehow.

EDIT: Pictures.

GTI:

Chip, exhaust, winter tires, dirt, and dreams.

Scirocco (spent months just fixing things - goes off this week to get cage/seats/suspension):

Ew, what was I wearing?

Anyways I'm Jalopnik/Oppo every day, I've just gotten permission to post. Glad to be here! I'll be sure to post updates as I go along with the Scirocco.

Team O'neil and Primitive. I mistyped, I only did one rally school with the GTI (winter tires + metal skid plate).

For Team O'neil I landed in PA, bought another 240 for $500, and drove it to New Hampshire a week before Christmas. Loads of fun!

Greetings fellow Scirocco owner! I have an '85 barn-find Scirocco that I'm slowly fixing up. Looks rough as old guts (ewwww, peeling clearcoat), but it's only got 32,000 miles on the clock, and it drives beautifully when the K-Jetronic isn't playing up. I'd love to see some photos of both!

Mine too! Luckily clear coat isn't an FIA requirement.

I had to resolder a lot of the joints in the K-Jetronic box. Fun fact, it's not an ECU. It's a "lambda sensor signal interpreter". Basically my idle was jumping up and down faster than I could do so with my foot. Also another neat note, all the capacitors were within spec! (I tested them all, ESR and capacitance test).

Oh and this Scirocco says 400k miles on the dash. Doing a 1.8T swap after I blow it up.

I'm quite jealous you've done all that. I'd like to go to a rally school to learn some new skills.

Ha, thanks! You should! Primitive is on the northern West coast and is a two day school. Basically just left foot breaking and car control, only $900. There is also the California Rally Series school in Orange County for you Socal folks.

Welcome aboard! Always happy to have more rally people on Oppo. If you're interested I can also make you an author on The Rally Takeover so you can share your rally stories there.

Any idea what rally you'll run first?

Heh, I've spent many an hour pondering the mysteries of K-Jetronic! I still like the irony that in its original guise, without the lambda box, it wasn't 'tronic' at all aside from the electric fuel pump. The whole idea of a mechanical fuel injection system still astounds me somewhat – I've also had a bit of experience with a similar system, built by Lucas, that was fitted to some Triumphs, and they're both utter marvels of clever engineering.

Mine has a shocking amount of rust in the fuel tank – replacing it is next on the to-do list – and it seems to have played havoc with the fuel system. It runs way too lean when cold, and has terrible vapour lock troubles when hot. I haven't put much energy into fixing that before I get the new tank in, but hopefully I'll have it back on the road this summer.

Here's a shot of it from when I put it away this fall:
